PhD student wins IET Hudswell International Research Scholarship

by Emma Rainbow

Martina Zambelli is studying her PhD in the Personal Robotics Lab within our Intelligent Systems and Networks group.

Martina is supervised by Professor Yiannis Demiris. She was awarded the IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology) Scholarship in recognition of her outstanding research into learning algorithms for autonomous robots and its impact on the academic environment and on society.

The IET award the Hudswell International Research Scholarship, worth £5,000, to assist with advanced research work leading to the award of a doctorate undertaken outside the applicant’s home country. Martina received her Laurea degree in Automation Engineering from the University of Padova and developed her master thesis project at KTH - Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm) in the Automatic Control Department.

The awards are made on a competitive basis and are assessed by the IET Scholarships Committee.  The process included an interview where Martina presented her current research and her future objectives. Together with other IET award winners, Martina will attend the IET’s Achievement Awards ceremony in November.

Martina says: “I was pleased to receive the notification that I was awarded the Scholarship. This is for me a great recognition of my research work that will help me realise my career objectives.”

Congratulations to Martina, we look forward to hearing about her achievements in the future.
