Imaging techniques can improve the health of patients with heart diseases, according to speakers at the latest Academic Health Science Centre seminar
Two leading AHSC researchers recently presented their research on how they are using different imaging techniques to investigate and help tackle cardiovascular disease.
The second seminar, hosted by Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust, as part of the Imperial College AHSC Seminar Series, can be viewed in the videos below.
Dr Chris Dunsby, a Reader at Imperial College London with a joint appointment between the Department of Physics and the Centre for Pathology, explained how advances in optical microscopy, a technique used to view a sample, were enabling scientists to study the sub cellular origins of irregular heartbeats.
Professor Dudley Pennell a Professor of Cardiology at Imperial College London and Director of the Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) unit at the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust, outlined how advances in managing heart disease made through innovations in imaging such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), have improved health outcomes for people with inherited heart diseases.
The AHSC Seminar Series events are open to the general public and staff and students from the NHS partner trusts and Imperial College London. The seminars aim to raise awareness of the research taking place at the Imperial College Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC).
The Imperial College AHSC is a partnership between Imperial College London, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust. It aims to advance medicine and improve the quality of life of both NHS patients and patients around the world by taking research discoveries and putting them into practice in healthcare as quickly as possible - introducing new therapies and techniques.
The next seminar to be hosted at Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust will take place on Tuesday 25 July, and will explore new ways of detecting and treating infection in respiratory disease. Presentations will be given by Dr Pantelis Georgiou, Reader at Imperial College London within the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Jane Davies, Professor in Paediatric Respirology & Experimental Medicine at Imperial College London and an Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine at the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust.
Dr Pantelis Georgiou’s talk will focus on the development and use of microchip technologies and diagnostics, developed at Imperial College London, for the detection of infection and antimicrobial resistance. Professor Jane Davies will outline her clinical research on detecting and treating infection in cystic fibrosis patients.
