Animated short film explains thermal management of battery cells
A short animation launched by the Department of Mechanical Engineering explains the science behind cooling lithium-ion battery cells.
The video is based on a research paper written by Ian Hunt, Yan Zhao, Yatish Patel and Gregory Offer from the Electrochemical Science and Engineering group.
The paper explores the effects of two different methods of thermal management applied to lithium-ion battery cells, and concludes that tab cooling extends the lifetime of a battery pack when compared to surface cooling.
The Imperial researchers worked with Crustacean Studio to create the animation, which presents the conclusions of the paper in an accessible, friendly manner.
