Imperial Racing Green participated in Formula Student in the Class 2 competition, where teams are judged for design, cost and business presentations.

Formula Student is an annual event that challenges university teams from across the world to design, build and compete their own racing vehicles. Class 1 of the competition is a vehicle race, while Class 2 is comprised of non-racing teams presenting their intended designs and prototypes for the following year.

The Imperial team brought to the contest an electric vehicle concept, EV3, which was ranked 12th overall, earning their highest score in the business presentation category (fourth overall, and best amongst UK electric vehicles.) The competition accepts both internal combustion and electric race cars.

“The array of manufactured prototypes and components impressed the judges, which is re-assuring that our Imperial Racing Green Design, Make and Test activities aligns well with delivering a competitive class 2 entry and showcases the talent and skills of our students”, says Dr Jeff Barrie, Senior Teaching Fellow in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. “The team obtained some great formative feedback from the design and business judges.”

The Imperial Racing Green team was comprised of Hugo Stock, Roman Chaika (both third year Mechanical Engineering students), Sven Kugathasan (Fourth year Electrical and Electronic Engineering), Harry Thompson and Rory Green (both Mechanical Engineering second year).

The 2017 Formula Student competition took place at the Silverstone Race Circuit in Northamptonshire on 20-23 July. This year’s Class 1 winner was a Cardiff University entry with an internal combustion engine.
