The SiMMS group from the Centre for Engagement and Simulation Science demonstrated their LapPaeds VR simulator at a paediatric endosurgery conference
The International Paediatric Endosurgery Group held its 26th Annual Congress for Endosurgery in Children in London on 19-22nd July.
Dr Fernando Bello and Dr Przemyslaw Korzeniowski of the SiMMS group within the Centre for Engagement and Simulation Science (ICCESS) attended the conference to showcase their Virtual Reality (VR) Laparoscopic Paediatric Hernia Repair Simulator. LapPaeds enables clinicians to practice a paediatric hernia repair without risk to a patient. Whilst there are a variety of VR laparoscopic simulators in the market, LapPaeds is the only simulator specifically designed for paediatric cases.
The device is still under development, but the response from delegates at the event who tried it for themselves was very positive and encouraging, reiterating the a need for a simulation device of this type aimed specifically at paediatric patients. The feedback gained at the event will help inform the next stage of development of this ongoing project.
