Anas Imtiaz, Research Associate in the Circuits and Systems group, has won the IET 2017 J A Lodge Award for his wearable sleep monitoring device.

Sleep deprivation affects almost a third of the UK population. An intelligent, wearable device that is able to monitor patients' sleep and generate clinically significant data in the comfort of their homes, can make it possible to detect and treat sleep problems at a very early stage.

Anas has desiged an ultra-low-power fully integrated system on chip, that implements a novel low-complexity algorithm developed specifically for this application. State-of-the-art circuits allow the device to run for up to two weeks on a single hearing aid battery, continuously streaming data to a smartphone via Bluetooth transmission.

This research has been carried out in the Wearable Technologies Lab, which is led by Prof Esther Rodriguez-Villegas.

The IET J A Lodge Award is given each year to an electronic or electrical engineer working at the early stage of their career, in the field of research and development in biomedical engineering.

Anas says: ‘I am extremely pleased and honoured to receive this prestigious IET Award. I believe that this recognition validates my research towards development of novel technologies for sleep medicine, and motivates me further to continue to strive to make a difference.’
