We are delighted to have welcomed new postgraduate students to the Department

by Emma Rainbow

Over 130 students began their MSc and PhD programmes this term, joining us from a variety of countries, cultures and academic backgrounds.

Our international intake helps make the campus and our department a dynamic and vibrant environment, and we're proud to host such a diverse and talented body of students.

Several of our new starters have come to us with international scholarships:

Shengxi Li is undertaking a PhD in Statistical Signal Processing with Professor Danilo Mandic in the Communications and Signal Processing group. He received his undergraduate and master’s degrees from Beihang University. Shengxi has been awarded the Lee Family Scholarship, which is presented annually to two outstanding candidates across the College.   Shengxi comes from Chengdu, the hometown of the Panda. He loves sports and plays the violin.

Yitong Li completed our Future Power Networks MSc in 2016, winning a Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the MSc, and has just begun a PhD in ‘Control of Power Electronic Converters’ with Dr Adria Junyent-Ferre from the Department's Control and Power research group.  Yitong is a recipient of the China Scholarships Council (CSC) Imperial Scholarship, which enables talented Chinese students to undertake PhD programmes at Imperial.

Two students have received a Commonwealth Scholarship, awarded to high achieving students from developing Commonwealth countries undertaking postgraduate study at UK universities:

Jerome Nsengiyaremye took his undergraduate degree in Electrical Power Engineering at the University of Rwanda, and an MSc in the same field at the University of Manchester.  He's now starting a PhD in Renewable Energy and Power Distribution Systems with Professor Bikash Pal from the Control and Power group.   Currently, more than half of the households in Rwanda do not have access to electricity.  Consequently, a lot of efforts in the energy sector are required to achieve the 100% access, Jerome’s Scholarship enables him to undertake research in this area. His aim is to come up with new strategy that will not only support the achievement of the targets in Rwanda but also promote reliable and sustainable access to electricity in communities in developing countries.

Anup Anup Mishra is taking the MSc degree in Communications and Signal Processing. He studied Electrical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi.

We send all our postgrads a warm welcome to London, and to our Imperial family, and wish them well with their studies.
