Global Health Forum: What causes cancer?

by

The Institute of Global Health Innovation returns with their monthly Global Health Forum, this month with a focus on the causes of cancer.

Cancer is formed when abnormal cells divide in an uncontrolled way. There are currently over 200 different types of cancer and in 2012, there were 14.1 million people diagnosed with an estimated 8.2 million of those people who died from the disease worldwide.

More than half of these deaths globally occurred in low and middle income countries.

The first Global Health Forum of term examined the links between cancer and our diets, gender, lifestyle and socio-economic status.

The Forum was chaired by Professor Majid Ezzati and heard from speakers including Professor Paolo Vineis, Chair in Environmental Epidemiology within School of Public Health who addressed ‘Socio-economic status, ageing and cancer’.

David Muller, Research Fellow in Epidemiology and Biostatistics within the School of Public Health discussed ‘Variability of Sex Disparities in Cancer Incidence over 30 Years: The Striking Case of Kidney Cancer'.

Our final speaker Dr Teresa Norat, Principal Research Fellow in the School of Public Health highlighted ‘Cancer and diet: an update of WCRF meta-analyses’.

The Forums encourage interdisciplinary discussions with the intention that they will foster inter-Faculty research initiatives and leverage the immense strengths of Imperial College to resolve global health priorities of the early 21st Century.

The next forum will focus on migrant health and takes place on Thursday 14th December from 3-5pm.  Venue and registration will be available shortly.
