Starting on Monday 26 February, you will be able to explore the world of science careers outside the laboratory.

At Imperial, the end of February brings a series of exciting events where you can learn about the different types of science communication and policy and the career opportunities these can lead to. Regardless of the degree you are studying, science is a significant part of life as an Imperial student. Whether you are passionate about building a career in science communication or haven’t yet considered this industry, the events below will reveal great career opportunities for everyone. 

1.      A career in medical writing? – what it involves and how to get started – Tuesday 27 February

Between 13:00 and 13:50, you will hear from a long time member of the European Medical Writers Association. Alison Rapley, who has worked as a medical writer for over 20 years, will discuss the different types of medical writing and the career paths you can explore within this field. You will also find out about how you can become a medical writer and the skills and qualifications this involves.

2.      Careers Café: Communicating contemporary science to a public audience – Wednesday 28 February

The Contemporary Science team from the Science Museum are visiting the Careers Service on Wednesday to have an informal discussion with our students. With great expertise, they are coming prepared to discuss all the aspects involved in the process of communicating contemporary science to a public audience.

3.      Dr Stephen Webster - A Future in Science Communication: your questions answered – Thursday 1 March

Dr Stephen Webster of Imperial’s Science Communication Unit is coming to talk about career opportunities in science communication. He will explain how science and engineering graduates – including doctoral graduates – can find fulfilling opportunities as communication experts who make daily use of their scientific expertise. Whether in TV and radio, journalism, museums or policy, science communication is a growing area and an excellent avenue for those who enjoy science but would rather talk about it than research it.
