Congratulations to CPE Researcher Dr Stuart Higgins (Departments of Materials and Bioengineering), who has been awarded an outreach grant.
Stuart received a £2000 grant through Imperial's Societal Engagement Seed Fund to run a public engagement scheme in the Somerset area: 'Science in the Supermarket'
Regions in Somerset, a county in the south-west of the UK, have some of the lowest levels of participation in higher education in the country. This is reflected in Imperial's undergraduate statistics, with a declining numbers of applicants from this region, and disproportionate representation in the student population.
The grant will fund an engagement stand hosted in prominent shopping areas in south-Somerset, staffed by current researchers from rural backgrounds. As well as an opportunity to share the researchers work, the event aims to promote positive role models and how studying STEM subjects can enable a wide-range of fulfilling careers.
Stuart encourages other Imperial staff to apply for the scheme!
