International Student Research Workshop hosted in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

This October, the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering hosted a Student Research Workshop in Brain Inspired Computing and Technologies.

This EMEA student Workshop was sponsored by the Broadcom Foundation. The event, which was organised and chaired by Dr Pantelis Georgiou and PhD student chair Amparo Guemes, brought together four leading universities from around the world - Imperial College London (United Kingdom), Tel Aviv University (Israel), University College Dublin (Ireland) and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (India), with seven PhD students representing each university to participate in the workshop.

This international workshop focused on team-building and emerging research between engineering, neuroscience and computer science aiming to build long-term collaborations between the students and to provide an experience that enhanced their professional and personal growth.

The participants worked in multi-disciplinary teams to innovate solutions for challenging brain-related disorders such as Huntington’s disease and traumatic brain injuries, and groups also worked on finding ways to evolve computing beyond Moore’s law using the brain as their inspiration. The projects were then presented in front of a distinguished jury of experts and a winning project was chosen.

In addition, during the workshop the participants had the opportunity to listen to a range of scientific talks from leading experts from Imperial College in the field of neuro-technology and brain-inspired computing, and also from inspirational industry experts such as Eben Upton, Founder of the Raspberry Pi Foundation and Gordon Lindsay from Cypress Semiconductor.

The workshop also included social events and activities, such as a treasure hunt in the Science Museum, a visit to the London Eye and a cultural day at Windsor Castle, which allowed the participants to experience life in the UK.
