PhD student wins in Geological Society photography competition
Wuquan Cui is one of twelve winners of the 2018 Earth Science Week photography competition run by the Geological Society of London.
His entry, titled ‘Going down to the ocean’, is a photo of peatlands from New Island, a small island in the West Falklands.
Wuquan Cui is part of the Hazelab research group in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial, which focuses on fire science, and his own work involves studying peatland fires to help mitigate them.
The competition asked entrants for images of UK and Ireland geology which means something to their lives – whether the location of a field trip, a place near home or simply somewhere they love to visit.
The winners will all feature in the Society's 2019 calendar and in an exhibition at Burlington House in London.
