Institute of Chemical Biology Centre of Doctoral Training Renewal

by Dr Stuart Haylock

The renewal of the Institute of Chemical Biology Centre of Doctoral Training will allow 8 further years of excellence in training for PhD graduates.

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) announced one of the most significant investments in research skills as 75 Centres of Doctoral Training (CDTs) were opened or renewed across the UK.  One announcement was the renewal of the Institute of Chemical Biology’s (ICB) CDT which has been training PhD graduates for over 15 years, the oldest CDT in the UK. This renewal will support and train PhD graduates in multidisciplinary chemical biology research and life science innovation over the next 8 years.

While this CDT renewal will still focus on developing tools and technologies to study biological problems, there will also be a strong focus on automation, data exchange and other technologies of the 4th industrial revolution, Industry 4.0. The CDT hopes to train PhD graduates to embrace the industrialisation of the life sciences. Students will work alongside strategic industrial partners to ensure that ideas are turned into reality, with a greater focus on student bioentrepreneurship and product development pipelines to ultimately lead to industrial or clinical benefit.

The ICB CDT renewal is 1 of 6 new and renewed Imperial College CDTs announced in this latest funding round, and congratulations are also due to all those who each have received EPSRC funding for their own CDTs.

We would like to also thank all the academic, administration and support staff who have helped us to submit/put together this bid.
