Professor Wood recognised as Emeritus Professor of Cardiology
Professor David Wood has been awarded the title Emeritus Professor of Cardiology following his retirement from the National Heart and Lung Institute.
Professor Wood was given this honour in recognition and appreciation of his service to Imperial College London and for his devotion to his research. He has a particular interest in the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD), and has developed guidelines on CVD prevention for the World Health Organisation, European Society of Cardiology and the British Cardiovascular Society.

David Wood is a world-renowned cardiologist and has conducted important research on the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease in Europe. He has been the principal investigator for the ASPIRE and EUROASPIRE studies, which have provided unique information across 26 European countries evaluating standards of preventive cardiology practice in hospital and primary care. He also led the EUROACTION and EUROACTION PLUS trials in the preventive cardiology, which are evaluated, nurse-led models of preventive care in hospital and general practice in eight European countries.
David is undoubtedly one of the main pioneers of preventative cardiology, not just in Europe, but worldwide. He has achieved this position through his research which has led to numerous articles published mainly in the Lancet, through his editorship of the European prevention journals and presidency of the European Association for Preventative Medicine culminating in his post as Vice-President of the European Society of Cardiology and then President of the World Heart Federation. David has been a leading figure in the European Society of Cardiology over the past 20 years and continues to play an important role. Following completing his term at the European Society of Cardiology David turned his attention to the World Heart Federation where after spending time on Counsel he became the President of the World Heart Federation. David is past President of the European Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation. Following his retirement from Imperial in 2019, he has been appointed as an adjunct Professor of Preventive Cardiology at the National University of Ireland in Galway.
David continues to be supported through the European Society of Cardiology for on-going studies throughout Europe, and he will maintain links with colleagues in the Clinical Trials and Epidemiology Section of the National Heart and Lung Institute. He continues as Senior Editor of the European Society of Cardiology Textbook of Preventive Cardiology and he was the first Joint Editor-In-Chief of the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology.
David Wood is an outstanding educator, has lectured worldwide in his subject of interest and for very many years ran the highly successful MSc in Preventive Cardiology at Imperial College London.
