CSEI Seminar - Innovation in Industrialized Construction from Silicon Valley
On Tuesday 18th June 2019 the Centre for Systems Engineering & Innovation hosted Assistant Professor Daniel Hall, Institute of Construction and Infrastructure Management, ETH Zurich, Switzerland
Abstract:
In construction, the mirroring of knowledge with tasks increasingly limits firm-level abilities to identify and pursue systemic innovation opportunities such as industrialized construction. This talk describes how three entrepreneurial firms in Silicon Valley have evolved their strategic approach and business model over the past five years to enable greater adoption of digital manufacturing and industrialized construction. Each firm has developed a different approach – relational, project-based integration; vertical integration; or digital systems integration. The talk will discuss benefits, challenges and technical requirements of each of these approaches, including future trends in industrialized construction including industry 4.0, mass customization, configuration platforms, and digital fabrication.
Bio:
Daniel Hall is Assistant Professor of Innovative and Industrial Construction at the Institute of Construction and Infrastructure Management, ETH Zurich, Switzerland. The overarching theme of his research is to enhance innovation and entrepreneurship in the construction industry through new technologies, processes, and organizational models to integrate the fragmented construction supply chain.
His research interests are industrialized construction and innovative project management. Ongoing research in industrialized construction includes circular economy models for industrialized housing, cloud-based configuration platforms, and new business models for systemic innovation in industrialized production. Ongoing research in innovative project management includes smart contracts using blockchain, managing digital fabrication, integrated project delivery, collaborative design management in VR/AR, and common data environments to enable virtual design and construction.
