Pan Wang and colleagues have won the International Conference on Engineering Design (ICED 2019) Design Society Distinguished Paper Award for their paper ‘Human-in-the-loop Design with Machine Learning’. The paper proposes a human-in-the-loop AI design method to generate designs taking into account a subject’s preference by employing EEG (electroencephalography) measured brain activity. This gives a new framework for communicating cognitive understanding of customer requirements, wherein designers can actually see a visual representation of what their clients want, at the design stage, based on the client’s brain signals. The paper was selected for the distinguished paper award from over 500 papers at the conference.
