Hundreds of eager freshers signed up to the vast array of clubs and societies available at the Imperial College Unionâs annual Freshersâ Fair on Tuesday this week. From Capoeira and Chess to Gliding and Golf, over 260 clubs and societies, run by the ICU, put up stalls to attract new recruits.
Freshersâ Fair is the biggest event of Freshersâ Week which commenced on Monday. New ICU President Stephen Brown explained: "Freshersâ Fair is a great opportunity for all new students to find out about the wide range of activities open to them. From sports clubs to food and drink societies there is something for everyone. I would encourage all new students to get involved as much as possible."
Darryl Mootoosamy, a first year computer science undergraduate, enjoyed the buzz of Freshersâ Fair. He commented: "It is a great environment here at Imperial. Everyone has the same mentality to work hard and play hard. I am looking forward to signing up to some of the sports clubs as the College has great sports facilities."
First year medic, Nayer Youakim, was also keen to sign up to clubs and societies in her first week at the College. She said: "I chose to come to Imperial because of its great location in central London. It has a good reputation for medicine and everyone is extremely friendly."
One Union club benefiting from the Freshersâ Fair was the Yacht Club. "Over 50 new students have signed up to our mailing list so far today," commented President of the club, Oliver Fairbairn, a third year mechanical engineering student. "We put on lots of activities out of London for our members including sailing round the Solent and the south coast." He added: "We meet every Monday and welcome new members. Social events to look forward to this term include ice skating and our annual Christmas meal."
Freshersâ Week also involves evening entertainment with Radio 1âs DJ Scott Mills playing on Wednesday in the Union, live music on Thursday evening with punk, indie group, Area 15 playing, and the week ends with the Freshersâ Ball 2007 on Friday night with Radio 1âs DJ Colin Murray headlining the event.
