Adriana Paluszny gave an online lecture entitled “Numerical modelling of fracture growth and permeability” to a large and appreciative audience from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Institute of Engineering & Management, and the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Engineering & Management, Kolkata, India.

Dick Selley read the poem 'An bailead de na Rathasair achadh geoloaiethe' (The Ballad of the Rasay field geologist) at the Geopoetry 2020 conference zoomed by the geological societies of Edinburgh and London. There were also contributions from alumni Helen Nattrass and Elizabeth Wong.

In September, Silva, V. L. S. gave a presentation at the European Association of Geoscientists & Engineers ECMOR XVII conference. His presentation paper is: Silva, V. L. S., Salinas, P., Pain, C. Smalley, P.C. gave a presentation at the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Improved Oil Recovery conference that held on 31 August - 2 September 2020. On 25 September, Jay Bullen gave an online seminar to the Faculty of Engineering at the Autonomous University of Querétaro, in Querétaro, Mexico. His talk was titled “Understanding the Interface Chemistry of TiO2/Fe2O3 Composite Photocatalyst-Sorbent Materials for the Treatment of Arsenic(III) Contaminated Waters”.

Luis Salinas Farrán will be presenting part of his PhD project in the Hydroprocess 2020 conference. The conference will be held online on 28 – 30 October and Luis’ presentation is titled "Combining XMT and MLA to describe the structural evolution of agglomerated ores: the impact of chloride ions in the curing process".

PhD Vivas

Diego Mesa, Fernando Sitorus and Hao Wang (Leo) have successfully passed their online Vivas, congratulations.

New Staff

Dr Diego Mesa has joined the Advanced Mineral Processing Research Group as a postdoc.

Dr Fernando Fernando – started on the 1 September as a Research Assistant with Dr Pablo Brito Parada.

Dr Mohammad Javad Shojaei – started on the 21 September as a Research Associate with Professor Martin Blunt and Dr Branko Bijeljic.

Dr Raphael Blumenfeld – started on the 2 October as a Research Fellow with Professor Peter King.

Dr Tenice Nangoo – started on the 6 October as an Advanced Research Fellow, Petroleum Geophysics applications with Professor Mike Warner.

To increase the reach of ESE’s Rock Collection, Rob Lowther has set up an Instagram account. It aims to showcase the broad content of the Collection, hopefully widening its future use in both teaching and research. Visit ESE’s Rock Collection Instagram page for more images.
