Three second year Mechanical Engineering students are tackling the Design Challenge launched by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).
Yaashiene, Talia and Naa are the members of the all-female team Imperial Vulcan, named after the ancient Roman god of fire and metallurgy.
As part of the challenge, the team will be designing, making and testing a repeatable vehicle that is able to move around and accurately land on set targets on a track. The local regional stage of the competition will take place in Spring 2021.
"We wanted to inspire others, especially those who might not feel too confident in their skills, to try something new, no matter how big or small it is", the girls explain on their new blog, where they will document their journey throughout the project.
Imperial Vulcan is an extra-curricular project functioning under the larger umbrella of Imperial Racing Green, alongside the Imperial Formula Racing and Shell Eco-Marathon teams.
The IMechE Design Challenge is open to teams of up to five first year or second year engineering students enrolled at a UK university or any IMechE international region, and it gives students "a taste of the ‘real world’ of engineering, challenging them to design, create, present and run a device to a strict technical specification."
