Top teachers, times two

Two of the School's staff have been awarded for their excellent teaching.

 

The College's Rector awards Rifat Atun for his teachingTwo of the Business School’s teaching staff have been recognised by their peers as making an outstanding contribution to teaching.

Professor Rifat Atun and Dr Tim Heymann have been commended by the College and the Faculty of Medicine respectively for their excellent teaching.

Professor Atun, was one of 14 Imperial academics to win a prestigious, College Teaching Award.  These are given to academics that excel in the quality, organisation and presentation of their teaching.  At the awards Sir Richard Sykes, Rector of the College, said:
“These awards remind us that teaching is a critically important component of Imperial’s overall strategy.  It is vital we ensure that students who choose Imperial receive the very best teaching available to enable them to develop and flourish and to ensure that Imperial remains a world leader in education.”

 

 

Faculty of Medicine Teaching AwardsDr Tim Heyman’s award from the Faculty of Medicine is open to clinicians who work in the NHS and teach on the medical degree.  He won his award for teaching excellence on the one year programme on Management which the Business School offers the Medical School.  Dr Heyman is a consultant at Kingston, a large NHS hospital, and Reader in Health Management at the Business School. This is the first time anyone from the Business School has won the Faculty of Medicine’s teaching award. 

Dot Griffiths, Business School Deputy Principal, said:
“We are proud of the quality of our teaching in the Business School and these awards are evidence that we take the student experience seriously.  The awards show that both the School and the College value the contribution made by excellent teachers.  Long may it be so!”

Professor Atun’s received perfect scores for his elective courses on the Master’s in Business Administration programme.

About Tim Heyman
Tim Heymann is Reader in Health Management with the Centre for Healthcare Management, Tanaka Business School. He combines the role with clinical medical practice as the senior Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist at Kingston Hospital, a large public health facility in South West London. He runs a busy private medical practice too.
He is a member of the Government's Better Regulation Commission. He is chair of the IT committee of the British Society of Gastroenterology and a member of the Society's Clinical Standards and Services Committee. He examines for the Royal College of Physicians.

About Rifat Atun 
Rifat Atun is Professor of International Health Management in the Centre for Healthcare Management. Rifat leads a multidiciplinary research group involved in a number of international and UK based research programmes. 
Rifat is a director of two Imperial College spin out companies operating in areas of biotechnology and nanotechnology. He consults and undertakes research programmes with the World Bank, World Health Organization, the UK Department for International Development and leading companies such as Pfizer Inc., the Vodafone Group and Tata Consulting Services. Rifat advises a number of governments in Europe, Latin America, Central Asia and the Middle East. He is member of the Strategic Technical Advisory Group of the World Health Organization for tuberculosis and Chairs the WHO Task Force on Health Systems and Tuberculosis Control. He is a Member of the Advisory Committee for WHO Research Centre for Health Development in Japan.
