Medics claim the first Virtual Varsity crown

by Maxwell Lacey

Imperial Medics claimed victory against Imperial College in the very first Virtual Varsity competition.

The annual competition, hosted by Imperial Athletes, pits sports clubs from Imperial College against their rivals in Imperial College School of Medicine Union in a bid to be crowned Varsity Champion.

Whereas Varsity normally brings clubs together for a festival of sport matches in-person, as this years event was held during the national lockdown in England, it was presented in a format quite unlike any previous one.

Clubs took over the Imperial Athletes Instagram throughout the weekend

Virtual Varsity took place across three days in March and challenged clubs to run, walk or cycle the furthest they could, competing against their counterpart club. At the end of each day, the total distances were calculated using the Strava app and whoever ran furthest gained points for their side.

Over 430 students took part in the three-day challenge covering a staggering 5401.41km

Over 430 students took part in the three-day challenge covering a staggering 5401.41km!

Ultimately, it was the Medics who prevailed to take the crown.

The individual club that covered the most distance was ICSM Boat, who recorded 469km as a team.

"Even with the national lockdown, we were determined to have something that allowed our clubs to enjoy Varsity as close to normal as possible" said Ross Unwin, ICU Deputy President (Clubs and Societies) "It was certainly a different format, but we were delighted that so many clubs and members took up the challenge of Virtual Varsity"

"Of course, we're hopeful that this is both the first and last Virtual Varsity we have to host! We can't wait to hopefully be back at Harlington next year."
