Younger generation mark World Antimicrobial Awareness Week
Children of HPRU staff attend second annual high-level meeting on AMR for World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2021
Last year’s lockdown meant the Unit’s usual face-to-face activities and Antibiotic Amnesty for World Antimicrobial Awareness week (WAAW) were replaced by a social media campaign and video. The latter, which can be viewed here featured children of the Unit’s staff asking “what have antimicrobials ever done for us anyway?” in a take of the famous Monty Python sketch. A year later and the children are back, this time drawing some important parallels between the threat of AMR and the current pandemic. The new video can be viewed here and via our Twitter account.
Fully grown members of the Unit also participated in an Imperial Current and Future Women Luminaries event, which has also been recorded. Professor Alison Holmes and Dr Nina Zhu recently joined Dr Elita Jauneikaite and President Alice Gast for a conversation about addressing the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance and drug-resistant infection. The event explored research in this area from a variety of perspectives and examined how these combined complementary efforts are focusing on improving the management and prevention of infections as well as preserving effective antimicrobials for future generations.
