The Department of Earth Science and Engineering (ESE) at Imperial has launched four scholarships to support women on MSc programmes.

ESE aims to increase the number of women joining the department and to create an environment in which women feel supported and empowered to study. 

To enable more women to study Master’s programmes in the department, we are offering scholarships for 2022 entry for candidates applying to Metals and Energy Finance, or to our computational courses including Geo-Energy with Machine Learning and Data Science, Applied Computational Science and Engineering, and Environmental Data Science with Machine Learning. 

For the Metals and Energy Finance MSc, these scholarships are thanks to partnerships with the Bank of Montreal (BMO) and to Women in Mining UK (WIM UK). The BMO Scholarship for Women in Metals and Energy Finance was first awarded for the 2015-2016 academic year and is open to female applicants to the MSc in Metals and Energy Finance starting in 2022 who demonstrate exceptional academic merit and/or potential. WIM UK provides a scholarship for women applying to the course starting in 2022.  

Home applicants to our computational courses may also be eligible for one of two departmental scholarships available to women who apply for 2022 entry. See further details of our MSc scholarships online. 

These scholarships support the actions that ESE has committed to as part of our Athena Swan award. 

Working with others to support women in STEM 

In supporting women, our aims align with those of Women in Mining UK, who support one of the scholarships for 2022 entry. Alex Buck, Managing Director at Women in Mining UK, said: “Part of our mission at Women in Mining UK is to promote the mining industry as a career for women and this begins at the education level.?
