The Department of Materials hosted Professor Clare Grey FRS from the University of Cambridge for the Bauerman Lecture 2022.
Professor Grey is an esteemed professor investigating the use of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to study and optimize batteries.
She is currently the director of the EPSRC Centre for Advanced Materials for Integrated Energy Systems (CAM-IES) and an Expert Panel member of the Faraday Institution. Professor Grey is also a Fellow of the Royal Society and a foreign member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a co-founder of the company Nyobolt, which seeks to develop batteries for fast charge applications.
The Bauerman Lecture 2022 was held on Wednesday 2 March at Imperial College London. Professor Grey presented a talk on 'New ways of looking at batteries - function, failure and fast charging'. The lecture was attended by both staff and students in the department, with an audience of 265 people attending in person. It was also streamed on YouTube, with the live stream receiving 1000 views.
After the lecture, Professor Grey was awarded the Bauerman Lecture medal by Professor Molly Stevens FRS and Professor Julian Jones.

The Bauerman Lecture
The Bauerman Lecture is a distinguished annual prize lecture held annually in the Department of Materials since 2016. It is named after Hilary Bauerman - one of the seven original students to enter the Government School of Mines in Jermyn Street in 1851.
The lecture is intended to be the annual highlight which brings together staff and students in the Department of Materials.
Previous speakers have included: Professor Stephen Mann FRS, Professor Sir Richard Friend FRS, Professor Jennifer Lewis, Professor Dierk Raabe and Professor Nicola Spaldin FRS.
