Celebrating International Women in Engineering Day 2022
Imperial’s Women in Engineering Network gathered on Wednesday 22 June to celebrate International Women in Engineering Day.
The celebrations included a mix and match series of events from workshops to table-top games, helping attendees develop their careers as well as network with their peers.
Starting with a workshop on self-confidence and building credibility, the group then moved on to a table-top escape game, where the aim was to work alongside friends and colleagues old and new from the Imperial engineering community.
Tiffany Dawson gave a keynote speech on ‘The murky middle: how to overcome mid-career barriers that stop women from progressing’. Tiffany is a former mechanical engineer who teaches women how to build their dream STEM careers without burnout.
Attendees of Tiffany’s talk said:
‘She came with a different perspective, she offered solutions, she was a great speaker.’
‘I really enjoyed Tiffany's talk. She highlighted some facts I have never thought about regarding the progress in my career. The talk definitely gave me some food for thought.’
Commenting on Imperial’s community of women engineers, Professor Julie McCann, Vice-Dean (Research) and Ambassador for Women in the Faculty of Engineering, said: ‘At the Faculty, we’ve been proactively engaging in the Athena SWAN framework to encourage and confirm its commitment to advancing the careers of women in engineering. To complement formal initiatives that support the training of our women engineers in topics related to career progression, and which train all our staff to better understand diversity and why it is important, we will be organising more community events to facilitate support networks. This will also include the chance to meet invited top women engineers to learn from them and be inspired.’
