Dr Jemima Thomas and Dr Archie Wall attended the BIA PULSE leadership and entrepreneurship training programme, pitching their ideas for a company

BIA PULSE was developed by the BioIndustry Association (BIA) and the Francis Crick Institute. The programme is aimed at aspiring entrepreneurs and first-time CEOs looking for advanced practical advice, support and feedback from established CEOs, leading entrepreneurs and renowned professionals.

Tate group researchers Dr Jemima Thomas and Dr Archie Wall presented their business ideas, with Jemima being awarded the prize for Best Pitch.

Archie said of the event, "The course covered a wide range of topics, relevant to starting any business in almost any field. In fact, many of the sessions would be of use more broadly - e.g. how to effectively present ideas, legal jargon in business contracts, and how to hire, interview and build effective teams.

It was brilliant to meet scientists and clinicians with very different backgrounds and experiences. Much of my learning during the course came from conversations with other attendees. I would really encourage people to apply to Pulse, however nascent their idea or business proposition.”

Jemima also found the programme very valuable, "It was a fantastic experience to take part in PULSE 2023, I learnt a huge amount over the three days. It was inspiring to be surrounded by fellow attendees from all areas of the life sciences who are passionate about commercialising their science, and this network will be highly beneficial in the future.

PULSE also provided a unique opportunity to discuss our business ideas with real investors to obtain invaluable feedback, and I was surprised and delighted to win ‘Best Pitch’ in my investor pitching session. I would definitely recommend PULSE to anyone interested in translating their science into the biotechnology sector."
