Spanish colleagues present at Vienna Conference
Anna Riera Mora and Iria Gonzalez Becerra shared their online language book designed for multidisciplinary groups of learners from STEM backgrounds.
Two colleagues from the CLCC Spanish team presented innovations applied in their language programme in the IV international conference of Spanish for Specific Purposes (JEFE-Vi) in Vienna this 5th-6th May.
Drs Anna Riera Mora and Iria Gonzalez Becerra presented the full design cycle and rationale for an online language book to cater for the needs of multidisciplinary groups of language learners from STEM backgrounds. Designed by Dr Riera Mora (Spanish and History of Science lecturer at Imperial College London), the book forms the backbone of the Spanish Level 4 syllabus and has allowed teachers to
tackle the dearth of pedagogical materials suited to Imperial students’ language learning needs. Dr Iria González Becerra contributed with an overview of trends within the unique language provision at Imperial and with a summary of the latest changes in our assessment practices.

The conference, organised by the Spanish department at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU) in collaboration with AAPE (the Austrian Association of Spanish Teachers), the Spanish Embassy and Cervantes Institute, attracted speakers from a broad spectrum of specific teaching and learning contexts, ranging from business to winemaking, and showcased some of the latest pedagogical practices in the field. The conference allowed for networking opportunities during a reception at the Spanish Embassy and dinner at Prater’s Schweizerhaus.
