Record attendance at Engineering Bring Your Child to Work Day

by Helen Wilkes

More than 100 children and grown-ups took part in the Faculty of Engineering’s Bring Your Child to Work Day on Thursday 27 July 2023.

Participants took part in an interactive science demonstration from Mad Science which taught them about solids, liquids and gases. The children watched chemical reactions and learned how to identify different types.

One parent said: 'My daughter enjoyed the experiments, especially the setting fire of the paper and inflating the balloons.'

Next up was a a hair-raising demonstration of static electricity.

Older children then took part in a slime-making workshop and made their own marshmallow molecules while younger participants joined a magic show. Face painting and balloon modelling were also on offer to make sure that everyone was busy.

Another parent told us how their day went: 'The variety of activity was great. The balloons were a lovely touch and added to the excitement for the children.'

Teams from Faculty of Engineering departments and institutes then showed children around the college and their labs to learn about bionic arms, paper marbling, data visualisation and more.

A parent who took part said:

'My son and I really enjoyed it and he had been looking forward to it for a long time. I was very impressed by everything. The lunch and the water bottle were a lovely end to a very nice day.'
