In memoriam: Mr Michael Lennon

Michael Lennon in the workshop

We were saddened to learn about the passing of Mr Michael Lennon over the summer.

Mr Michael Lennon joined the Department of Materials in January 2012. He previously worked for the Institute of Shock Physics based in the Department of Aeronautics. A toolmaker by profession, Michael was a master craftsman who brought a wealth of skill and knowledge.

Michael worked in the Royal School of Mines workshop, which supports the Departments of Materials, Earth Science and Engineering and Bioengineering. His work focused on making components that can support research or teaching – and in his own words, Michael showed his dedication by stating that "we are always up for a new challenge!"

Colleagues recognised his skill by describing his machining skills as "second to none." As an example of his craftsmanship, Michael recently machined a resonator out of oxygen-free copper to contribute to the world-leading efforts in the development of masers.

Michael also took on the role of Apprentice Tutor, which he continued to do until June this year, mentoring seventeen mechanical workshop technicians for eleven years. He worked hard to pass on his knowledge and machining skills to the next generation of technicians and often supported students beyond skills training. In a recent blog posting, Michael shared how rewarding the experience had been and how it had been fantastic to see younger technicians learn new skills over the years and take these forward in their new roles.

Michael was a familiar and friendly face in the workshop, always ready to offer advice and help to staff and students. He was more than just a work colleague, regularly socialising with staff from the Royal School of Mines workshop and other departments at social events outside of Imperial College London.

Michael left too soon. He will be sorely missed by the Department of Materials and all who knew him. Michael left us with great memories, and we are grateful for his invaluable support to our community.
