New students make their mark at bowling event

by Emily Govan, Amelia Barron

New Life Sciences undergraduate students had the opportunity to go bowling and socialise as part of this year's Welcome Week activities.

Life Sciences hired out All Star Lanes in Westfield for staff and year 1 students to go bowling and socialise, helping them settle into university life and get to know others on the course. Students were allocated onto lanes by their personal tutor group, giving staff an easy way to cheer on and get to know their tutees.

Students really enjoyed themselves, with many taking the time to thank staff for the event, letting them know it had helped them get to know one another better and meet new people - they were the envy of many other undergraduates! Most students stayed at the venue after their game to get to know one another and relax in the VIP area or sing their hearts out in one of the Karaoke booths.

Staff attended and mingled with students and their tutees, cheering them on while they played a game. Students appreciated staff time, being able to ask questions and they got to know some key staff such as their Year Convenors and Senior Tutor.

Dr Ste Cook said: ‘I had a really lovely time. It was great to be able to speak to my new personal tutees and other first-years in a relaxed atmosphere, and to demonstrate to them just how bad I am at bowling and singing!’

Dr Gerald Larrouy-Maumus said: ‘A big thank you to everyone who attended and made the event, it was a great afternoon that was thoroughly enjoyable because of the enthusiasm and joy you all brought. Getting to know one another while spending time together I saw some great encouragement for one another when things weren’t going as great as they could’.
