1st Conference of the European Network for Postdocs in Cancer Research

by Dr Thomas J Burden

Tate group member Dr Efthymios Spyridon-Gavriil attends the First Conference of the European Network for Postdocs in Cancer Research

'PostdoCaRe Europe', is a newly established European network of postdoctoral scientists working in cancer research. It was founded ‘by postdocs for postdocs’, in order to provide a platform for scientific exchange among young cancer researchers. After several successful online events,'PostdoCaRe Europe' organised the first in-person conference ‘Shaping the Cancer Research of Tomorrow’ in Heidelberg on October 25-27, 2023, with the support of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities.

The aim of the conference was to celebrate the interdisciplinary nature of cancer research, building strong bridges between Bench (wet lab), Bytes (computational), and Beds (clinical) research. The keynote speakers were:

- Anna Obenauf, Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP), Vienna

- Moritz Gerstung, DKFZ German Cancer Research Center, Heidelberg

- Eduard Batlle, Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB), Barcelona

In addition, postdocs from all over Europe presented their research, demonstrating the amazing potential of the next generation of cancer researchers.

Dr. Efthymios S. Gavriil, Research Associate in the Tate group (pictured above), was a member of the organising committee of the conference. He chaired the session of Dr. Anna Obenauf’s talk, and he presented the discovery of Hedgehog Acyltransferase (HHAT) inhibitors, an ongoing project in the Tate group, which represents a novel strategy to inhibit Hedgehog signalling in cancer.
