Imperial’s Data Science Institute and Grantham Institute have jointly set up a new research lab, ‘Data & AI 4 Climate’ to tackle climate change.
The Data & AI 4 Climate Lab is a new interdisciplinary group that brings together data, AI and climate experts from around the College. The lab is designed to increase the number of opportunities for joint proposals.
The launch event took place on 11th January 2024 and began with a presentation on an introduction of Climate Science from Professor Joeri Rogelj, Director of Research at the Grantham Institute.
Next, Dr Rossella Arcucci, Director of Research at the Data Science Institute spoke about an introduction to AI and its current worldwide situation.
“Often people see artificial intelligence as something that will impact us in the future. However, AI is here, and it has already been transforming society for years. At Imperial we work on developing AI for good”. Dr Rossella Arcucci
Dr Arcucci said: “Often people see artificial intelligence as something that will impact us in the future. However, AI is here, and it has already been transforming society for years. At Imperial we work on developing AI for good”.
Attendees introduced themselves and were split into groups to discuss key ideas and areas of intersection between AI and climate.
Director of Innovation at the Grantham Institute, Alyssa Gilbert said: “We can see many opportunities to apply research and innovative solutions to enhancing our understanding of the climate change challenge and our ability to tackle these challenges. At Imperial we are uniquely placed to combine excellence in AI and climate to deliver solutions. I am looking forward to seeing how this new lab can deliver better solutions at this interface.”

The next steps for the team will be to organise a 'Speed Storming' session, where researchers can network with others from the group. Stay tuned for more information about this in the coming months.
