LGBTQIA+ Career Journeys and Inclusive employers
As LGBTQIA+ History Month draws to a close we look back at our two career themed events.
On the evening of 13 February, we were privileged to be joined by four fantastic LGBTQIA+ panellists who were happy to discuss their career journey and experiences of being LGBTQIA+ in their workplace. We’re incredibly grateful to Jennifer (Carpmaels & Ransford), Paulo (TD Securities), Seth (Kearney) and Vero (Kroll) who shared their insights and took questions form our audience. We heard about microaggressions and how the LGBTQIA+ community can act to inform others about their perceived behaviours and the value, and role, of allies was discussed. We also heard about the value of LGBTQIA+ employee networks, how they’re funded and function, and that the culture of an organisation is driven from by both senior executives and the working masses. The panel were also kind enough to share their lived experience at university, volunteered their achievements and regrets, and offered advice and opinion to many questions received during the call. A massive thanks also to Devni form IQ for chairing an amazing event.
As the month progressed, we also delivered a session to help students to find LGBTQIA+ inclusive employers delivered by our Deputy Director, Rich. The session helped students to understand the Equality Act and how it helps to protect certain characteristics and develop an inclusive workplace for all. Rich drew on his personal experiences and of those within his network and highlighted the value of various equality indices, EDI initiatives and award schemes, and presented students with a seven-step checklist to use as a practical tool to assess if an employer offers a suitable environment for them as an individual.
