Top tips
- When building your profile, try to write in concise, action-orientated statements and be genuine and truthful in what you say
- A great starting point for making connections is to find graduates from your degree by filtering the Imperial College LinkedIn alumni page
- LinkedIn also allows you to search for ‘Groups’ which is a great way to quickly find people working in the industry you’re interested in
- When you try to connect with someone, you should always add a note to introduce yourself – explain who you are, how you found them and why you’d like to connect
- In conversations with new connections, stay clear of controversial topics such as politics or ethical debates
- Don’t take it personally if someone doesn’t respond to you – the likelihood is that they are busy and just may not have time to reply to you
- Keep your profile updated with current skills and information
