Ever thought about studying/working in Japan?

by Noemie Oster

Living abroad is a great way to expand your horizons, learn about new cultures and develop important life skills.

At the Careers Service, we are always excited to share upcoming opportunities with our students and are therefore eager to tell you about these two amazing programmes in Japan.

The MEXT Postgraduate Scholarship Programme

The Japanese Government's MEXT programme offers UK nationals the opportunity to study in Japan for 24 months from April 2025 or 18 months from September/October 2025.

Research or study can be undertaken in almost any field so long as it is in the pursuit of a Master's, professional or doctoral degree. No previous knowledge of Japanese is required in most subjects and the scholarship allows for six months of Japanese language classes if required.

The application form and more information can be found on the Embassy of Japan website. Applications must be submitted by 17.00 Monday 13 May.

The JSPS Pre/Post-doc Research Fellowships

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) are providing the opportunity for UK, European, North American and Canadian researchers ordinarily based in the UK or Ireland to do cooperative research with leading research groups at Japanese Universities and Institutions.

Applicants need to be either within two years of finishing their PhD at the time of applying or have obtained their PhD outside of Japan within the last six years. Fellowships must start between 1 November 2024 and 31 March 2025.

For more information, head to the JSPS Final Call webpage. Applications must be submitted by Monday 3 June.
