Sir William Wakeham Award 2024 recipients announced
The winners were announced at the Department of Chemical Engineering’s annual Postdoc Symposium.
Each recipient was presented with a certificate in acknowledgement of their dedication towards the department, and outstanding contributions to chemical engineering research, teaching, outreach, mentorship, entrepreneurship and service.

Sir William Wakeham award
Instituted in 2014, the annual Sir William Wakeham award recognises early career researchers (no more than 5 years of postdoctoral research experience, excluding career breaks) who have made a significant contribution to their research field and have advanced their professional development.
There is a £2000 prize associated with the award and the winner and highly commended awardees are also invited give a presentation at the annual postdoctoral symposium.
Sir William Wakeham is a visiting professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London. He first joined the Department as a lecturer in 1971, and was Head of the Department from 1988 until 1996, when he became Deputy Rector of the College. From 2001 to 2009 he was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton. He was knighted in 2009 for services to Chemical Engineering and to Higher Educatio
Chemical Engineering Postdoc Symposium
The Postdoc Symposium is the main postdoctoral event of the year, celebrating the many and multifaceted contributions made by postdoctoral staff, in research and day-day life in and out of the the Department of Chemical Engineering. It is organised by the the Postdoc Committee, with support from the Department.
Postdoctoral researchers are invited to submit abstracts and present their work with posters or talks, to all departmental community. This year, the following speakers were recognised:
- Dr Angus Pedersen, Departmental award for best overall talk
- Dr Vivek Verma, IMSE award for best talk in molecular engineering
The symposium was followed by a lively social event organised by the Postdoc committee.
