It began during COVID-19 lockdown and has become a habit – but what a good one!

Community Safety and Support Officer Guiseppe (Joe) Masi has the LinkedIn Learning habit – totting up an incredible 180-plus completed courses through Imperial’s training membership of the platform over the last four years.

Apart from the practical office skills training readily available, Joe’s focus has been on the many courses that complement his everyday work supporting the Imperial Community.

“Learning opens your mind, challenging your own thoughts and opinions, leading to better outcomes,” he says.

“I like the short courses, they are just enough to keep you interested, and lead you to explore subjects further in more depth.”

Imperial’s Community Safety and Support Officers are trained specifically in a wide range of hands-on and practical help and interventions, such as First Aid, conflict management, physical intervention, health and safety. They each get allocated study days a year to undertake specialist courses.

Joe says: “I enjoy new training and welcome it.” He clearly does, as the many courses he has found in addition on LinkedIn, largely taken in his own time, really support his ‘duty of care’ to the community he has served for almost 25 years, as well as his personal professionalism.

Courses he has completed include: Decoding body language; Confronting racism; Confronting bias; Striving across our differences; Fighting gender bias in the work place; to name just a few.

Then there are the personal development focused ones, such as: How to learn faster; Four time wasting habits how to quit; How to think better by thinking backwards.

On top are those tools for collaborating and building working relationships in the team: Leading productive meetings; Leading and working in teams; Prioritising your tasks.

Joe, who is based on our Hammersmith Campus, adds: “Everything I learn helps me to understand others, their lives and experiences, and I can put that knowledge into practice to help our community.”

It’s easy to sign up using your existing college login details, access is anytime using any device, eg. iPad, smartphone, etc, from anywhere with internet access.
