Engineering Dean awarded Medal of Honour

Professor Nigel Brandon has been awarded a Christian Friedrich Schönbein Gold Medal of Honour at the European Fuel Cell Forum 2024.

The award recognises outstanding contributions to the advancement of science and technology; winners have contributed for many years and achieved a high level of recognition within the community. Professor Brandon’s award recognises his outstanding scientific contribution to solid oxide technology.

Professor Brandon attended the award ceremony on Friday 5 July in Lucerne, Switzerland. He delivered a keynote lecture on the topic ‘From bench to business – innovations in solid oxide cell and stack technology.’

The European Fuel Cell Forum is an international meeting on solid oxide science, technology and implementation. Two previous Gold Medal of Honour recipients have come from Imperial College London: Professor Brian Steel in 1994 and Professor John A. Kilner in 2004.

On receiving his award, Professor Brandon said: “It was a real privilege to be following in the footsteps of my colleagues Brian Steel and John Kilner, as a recipient of this award, and my thanks go to the many students and colleagues in both academia and industry with whom I have had the pleasure of working since I graduated from Imperial College with my PhD some 40 years ago”.

Professor Nigel Brandon OBE FREng FRS is the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Professor of Sustainable Development in Energy. He was previously the Faculty’s Vice Dean (Research), Founding Director of the Sustainable Gas Institute, and Founding Director of the Energy Futures Lab. He is a founder of Ceres Power, a FTSE listed fuel cell company spun out from Imperial College in 2000 and RFC Power, a flow battery company spun out from Imperial College in 2018.
