Staff and students from across the School of Public Health have been recognised in the 2024 President’s Awards for Excellence.
The President’s Awards for Excellence recognises the achievements of staff based on four award categories: Culture and Community, Education, Research, and Societal Engagement. Among the winners for each specialist area, those who have made exceptional contributions are also awarded with the President’s Medal.
Here is a round-up of this year's winners and nominees from the School of Public Health:
President’s Awards for Excellence in Education
Wendy Kwok
Winner of the President’s Award for Excellence in Education (Teaching).
"Wendy demonstrated exemplary commitment, creativity and concern for student learning and welfare and has been a model contributor to the management administration and organisation of the postgraduate taught programmes in the School of Public Health."
Jenny Husbands
Winner of the President’s Award for Excellence in Education (Supporting the Student Experience)
"Jenny has played a particularly important role leading, shaping and delivering successful innovation across the School of Public Health that have led to important improvements in the student experience. Jenny was recognised for being a compassionate and reliable tutor, always looking out for her students' wellbeing and determined resolve in their pastoral and academic concerns."
Grazia Antonacci
Winner of the President’s Award for Education (Outstanding Assistant Supervisor)
"The panel recognised Grazia’s approachability, willingness to listen and proactive support which makes her an exceptional assistant supervisor who contributes to the success and well-being of PhD students. Grazia’s dedication to the academic and personal growth of her students is evident in her continuous efforts to create a supportive and nurturing environment."
President’s Awards for Excellence in Societal Engagement
Stephanie Powell
Winner of the President’s Medal for Excellence in Societal Engagement
"Stephanie is the Community Collaboration Lead within the Undergraduate Primary Cre Education Team which has forged links with community-facing organisations and the primary care aspects of the medical degree. The panel recognised how Stephanie’s efforts and hard work have strongly influenced the way the university approaches research and teaching. Stephanie has enabled and motivated others to develop their skills, built trust and showcased an authentic willingness to listen, learn and collaborate. She has embedded lived experiences and community perspectives into her work and teaching. This has resulted in truly meaningful and long-term collaborations and the impact of Stephanie’s work has been transformative for students, researchers and communities."
Sabine van Elsland
Winner of the President’s Award for Excellence in Societal Engagement (The Leadership Award)
"The engagement activities, training and media campaigns Sabine developed have been the pillars of communicating Imperial’s scientific work. This has resulted in collaborations with public health agencies worldwide and often leading to actual public health policy changes. Sabine has shown leadership and dedication through exemplary mentorship and fostered an environment, at the MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis, where societal engagement is not just encouraged but it positively flourishes."

Winner of the President’s Award for Excellence in Societal Engagement (Partner Award – Team)
"The WellHome ambassadors collaborated as a team to play a crucial role in supporting research into London’s first indoor air quality study, with a range of lived experiences and expertise their contributions to the study have been an integral part of WellHome’s engagement, involvement and participatory research. Their work and presence will continue to build the foundations for meaningful and equitable participatory research in our local communities."
Alexandra Cardoso Pinto
Winner of the President’s Award for Excellence in Societal Engagement (Student Award – Individual)
"Throughout her engagement activities, Alexandra has led projects delivering true impact for all of those involved. She has partnered with charities and schools and has volunteered her times to countless endeavours. Alexandra has built deep connections with patients and communities resulting in work which is far-reaching and inspirational, a true role model that represents Imperial’s values."

Highly commended for the President’s Award for Excellence in Societal Engagement (Achievement Award – Team)
"Through their collaborative work the team has formed meaningful relationships with underrepresented audiences. By involving the public voice in their research they have contributed to the improvement of health and wellbeing in our local communities."
Music of the Earth (Shawn Lee, Ruthie Parsons)
Highly commended for the President’s Award for Excellence in Societal Engagement (Student Award)
"This team of PhD students communicated their work through creativity by using music to bring awareness to climate and environmental science. This was a really effective initiative between researchers, composers and the public that was driven by the nominees."

Producing Rational Evidence for Parasiticide Pollution (PREPP) Team (Leon Barron)
Winner of the President’s Award for Excellence in Culture and Community (Collaboration)
"This award is made in recognition of how the whole team worked collaboratively to develop an effective, innovative and integrative approach that forges critical links between primary science, the understanding of behaviour and real-world impacts."
