Room for faith
To support the cultural and spiritual needs of the Imperial community a new multi-faith space is being developed on White City Campus.
To be housed on the ground floor of 88 Wood Lane building, the new space will provide a fit-for-purpose and accessible environment for anyone wishing to observe their faith, or simply spend quiet contemplation.
It will address shortcomings in current provision, including location, and especially for our Muslim community.
The prayer space allows for separate areas for men and women, through adjustable dividers. There will be dedicated ablution facilities and appropriate ventilation to ensure comfort and compliance with religious requirements.
Extensive consultation and engagement with key stakeholders, particularly the Islamic Society, has ensured the design aligns with needs and preferences. Their valuable feedback has shaped the final layout and functionality of the space.
Building Operations have provided the circa £38k to fund the project, led by Building Manager, Raymond Henry. “I’m delighted to be able to help provide this much-needed amenity”, he said.
A contractor has been appointed and the ambition is to have the facility ready early in the autumn term.
The new space will significantly increase capacity, accommodating 20, and because of the location, to serve those on both the north and south of the campus. It will be readily available to swipe card holders - existing facilities are a bit tucked away from reach for some users.
In line with our sustainability goals, the project will use recycled materials, energy-efficient systems, and water-saving fixtures to minimise environmental impact.
“Creating a sustainable and inclusive campus environment is a priority for us,” said Adam Srodzinski, Interim Director of Property and Major Projects. “This project is a step towards that goal.”
Raymond Henry added: “This initiative exemplifies Imperial’s dedication to creating great environments that support the wellbeing and diverse needs of the university’s community.”
We will provide an update when the area becomes ready for use.
