Lame Attends 2024 RSC Med-Chem Summer School

by Dr Thomas J Burden

Lame, a 3rd year PhD student in the Tate group participated in the 2024 RSC Med-Chem Summer School.

This biennial event hosted by the RSC at Loughborough University, cover topics of interest to drug discovery researchers, helping to foster understanding of the factors governing modern drug discovery. The school is aimed at graduate and post-doctoral chemists with 1-5 years’ experience in the field of drug research. Given that drug discovery is a very interdisciplinary subject, delegates from across chemistry, biological or computational backgrounds benefit from attendance at the school.

This year, Lame a 3rd year PhD student in the Tate group working on novel inhibitors of hedgehog acyltransferase, participated in the summer school. During which, she spent the five days attending the course delivered by experts in the field. From industry to academia, through lectures, hands-on tutorials and presentations, and an evening lecture from a distinguished speaker. Whilst attending the program Lame also presented her PhD work in a poster competition, and won the “2024 Tutor’s Choice Poster Prize”, sponsored by RSC Pharmaceutics.

I was privileged to participate in the 2024 RSC Medicinal chemistry summer school in Loughborough which featured a series of lectures, tutorials, case studies and group work at the end of the week that combined all the concepts we learned throughout the week. It was a very intellectually stimulating week with experts in fields across drug discovery sharing their knowledge and lessons learned on their journeys. There was an atmosphere of openness which created space to ask questions and also interact freely with other delegates from academia, biotechs, pharma and software companies. It was fascinating to discover how we tackle drug discovery from different angles. I learned a lot in this summer school and hope to someday work with some of the incredible people I met there. This was a very enlightening experience for me as an early career researcher and I will take it with me in my PhD and my career moving forward. I was honoured to walk away with the tutor’s choice poster prize sponsored by RSC pharmaceutics. I would like to thank my co-author Zhangping Xiao.
