Imperial Research Team Receives Best Paper Award at VLDB 2024

The paper's innovative approach was recognized by the VLDB awards committee for its potential impact on next-generation database technologies.

Imperial’s Department of Computing is proud to announce that a team of its researchers has been awarded the prestigious Best Paper Award in the Research Track at the 50th International Conference on Very Large Data Bases (VLDB 2024) in Guangzhou, China. 

The winning paper, titled "BOSS - An Architecture for Database Kernel Composition," was co-authored by PhD Student Hubert Mohr-Daurat alongside Postdoctoral Researcher Xuan Sun and faculty member Holger Pirk. The research introduces a novel architecture for Database Systems centered around the idea of database kernel composition.  

The paper's innovative approach was recognized by the VLDB awards committee for its potential impact on next-generation database technologies, highlighting the outstanding quality and significance of the research conducted at Imperial. The award ceremony in front of almost 1500 conference attendees celebrated this contribution to the field. 

Faculty member Holger Pirk, one of the co-authors, expressed pride in his team's achievements, stating, “This award is a testament to the innovative work being done by our students, staff and faculty and the emphasis on excellence that drives research at Imperial.” 

VLDB is one of the top international forums for data management and database research, attracting researchers and professionals from around the world. Winning the Best Paper Award places Imperial's "Large Scale Data and Systems" group at the forefront of the field, demonstrating the College's role as a leader in computing research. 

The Department of Computing extends its heartfelt congratulations to Hubert Mohr-Daurat, Dr. Xuan Sun, and Holger Pirk for this outstanding achievement.
