The Department of Materials has announced its academic promotions for 2024.
Congratulations to Professor Mark Wenman, Dr Chun Ann Huang, and Dr Jonathan Rackham on their promotions.
Professor Mark Wenman
Professor Mark Wenman has been promoted to Professor.
Professor Mark Wenman joined the Department of Materials in November 2008 as the EDF Energy Research Fellow in Nuclear Fuels. He was made a Lecturer in 2011, a Senior Lecturer in 2017, and a Reader in Nuclear Materials in 2021.
He is the Director of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Nuclear Energy Futures and Co-Director of the Centre for Nuclear Engineering at Imperial.
His key research interests are in nuclear engineering materials, specialising in metallurgy. These include micromechanisms of fracture, hydrogen embrittlement and corrosion, irradiation damage, and modelling from continuum through to micro and atomic scales. Materials include nuclear fuel, zirconium alloys, stainless steel and ferritic steel.
Professor Wenman recently shared more about his research and the potential of Nuclear Energy in this research video for the Department of Materials and in this podcast interview for ModoEnergy.
Dr Chun Ann Huang
Dr Chun Ann Huang has been promoted to Reader.
Dr Chun Ann Huang completed her undergraduate studies in the Department of Materials at Imperial College London and her DPhil in Materials Science at the University of Oxford. She re-joined the Department of Materials at Imperial in 2022 from King's College London, where she was a Lecturer.
Her research focuses on energy storage materials, manufacturing technologies for energy devices, and advanced characterisation. The energy devices include lithium-ion, sodium-ion, solid-state batteries, and supercapacitors.
Dr Huang recently received the 2023 TechWomen100 Award. She also received an ERC Starting Grant in 2022 to develop new materials and advanced manufacturing technologies, including rechargeable lithium batteries and solid-state batteries.
Dr Jonathan Rackham
Dr Jonathan Rackham has been promoted to Senior Strategic Teaching Fellow.
Dr Jonathan Rackham completed his PhD with the Department of Materials in 2018 as part of the CDT for Advanced Characterisation of Materials before joining the academic staff as a Strategic Teaching Fellow.
He teaches across a wide range of core topics, with a focus on characterisation. He has research interests in authentic assessment, automated feedback, and feedback literacy.
Dr Rackham has recently been seconded to a working group on assessment and feedback practices across the university.
