Imperial College London launches the New Rhein Emerging Leaders Academy Scholarships to improve public health in low- and middle-income countries.

The new scholarship will support exceptional students on Imperial’s Master of Public Health (online) programme with a passion for making a positive impact on health in their home countries or region. This initiative aims to minimise the risk of ‘brain-drain’, ensuring that the skills and knowledge developed on the programme are used to support public health improvements in communities around the globe.

New Rhein Emerging Leaders Academy Scholarship

The New Rhein Emerging Leaders Academy Scholarship has been made possible following a generous donation from The New Rhein Foundation, a private foundation founded in 2022.

The Foundation’s mission includes making grants and investments to further the development of existing pharmaceutical drugs and devices for low- and middle-income communities and creating and supporting educational programs and professional opportunities in the life sciences industry for qualifying individuals from underprivileged backgrounds.

The scholarship will fund two students who enrol on the part-time, fully online Masters of Public Health programme. Subhanu Saxena, President of the New Rhein Foundation and Council Member of Imperial College London, said: “We are delighted that the New Rhein Foundation can partner with Imperial College London on such an important effort for global public health. We are excited to support future leaders who will drive important change where it is needed the most.”

Imperial Master of Public Health (online)

Developed with leading experts from across the School of Public Health, the Master of Public Health (online) (formerly the Global Master of Public Health) provides students with a comprehensive grounding in public health, exploring different approaches, systems and innovations which learners can integrate into their own practice and research.

The masters programme welcomed its first cohort of students in 2019 and has now seen more than 300 students graduate from over 75 countries.

Professor Neil Ferguson, Director of the School of Public Health, said: “We are incredibly thankful to the New Rhein Foundation for supporting our students with this new scholarship. Our Master of Public Health (online) programme was designed to provide world-class education to students in all corners of the globe, especially those where public health capacity is needed the most.

“The New Rhein Emerging Leaders Academy Scholarship will provide the opportunity for students to have a long-lasting impact on their own communities, countries and regions.”

Applications for the Master of Public Health (online) are now open. Details on how to apply for the New Rhein Emerging Leaders Academy Scholarships can be found via the School of Public Health web pages. The deadline to apply to 23:59 April 30, 2025.
