by Bethyn Yates, Stephen Johns

Students from Imperial and Tokyo Tech explored collaborations and new ideas in health and wellbeing as part of the Global Fellows Programme.

This year the programme saw 30 PhD students from both institutions take part in a five-day programme hosted by Imperial, to enhance their skills in an international and interdisciplinary setting.

Throughout the week, the students engaged in group work, talks, activities, and sessions focused on developing skills under the theme of ‘Good Health and Wellbeing’.

The programme built on the aim of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 3 which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all, at all ages.

The students worked in groups to develop collaborative interdisciplinary project proposals related to the theme, which they presented to a panel of judges at the end of the week.

Imperial’s Professor Yun Xu, from the Department of Chemical Engineering, welcomed the students to Imperial’s South Kensington Campus and said: “Imperial’s world-class research relies on international and interdisciplinary collaborations, and we are proud to work with Tokyo Tech for our fourth iteration of this programme.

"It offers a unique opportunity for PhD students to develop skills to succeed in international and interdisciplinary collaborations, whether in research or beyond.”

An Imperial student shared their experience, saying: “It was a career-enriching and life-affirming week - the most memorable experience of my PhD so far. The programme was a path to making genuine international connections.”

A Tokyo Tech student echoed these sentiments, stating: “I felt lucky to have experienced this opportunity to collaborate in such a diverse and international environment, it was a a truly eye-opening experience. It has been an extremely positive and wholesome experience in collaborative work.”
