Hilary Watt has been awarded the 2024 American Statistics Association TSHS Outstanding Teacher Award.

Hilary, Senior Teaching Fellow in Statistics in the School of Public Health, has received the award as recognition of her innovation and passion for teaching statistics.

The award is presented annually to recognise an outstanding statistics educator and mentor in the health sciences by the Section on the Teaching of Statistics within the American Statistics Association.

In her role Hilary has developed the statistics masterclass, which is available to all students and staff within the School of Public Health. This has enabled many students to benefit from Hilary’s innovative teaching methods for conceptual understanding of p-values and of confidence intervals

On receiving the award Hilary said: "It is an honour to receive this award. I must thank countless colleagues who gave me valuable opportunities. Student who interacted with me helped me see when strategies needed to be refined. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to indulge my passion for finding and testing innovative statistics teaching strategies at Imperial. I am also very grateful to have mentored so many people, especially through my advisory role for the NIHR research design service and opportunities arising from that role."

Hilary has supported students with 1:1 support for Master's students and has developed and delivered dissertation support, with a special focus on preparing data for analysis.
