School of Medicine celebrates 2024 Education Awards

by Dorrit Pollard-Davey

Imperial College School of Medicine (ICSM) recognised staff contributing to its undergraduate programmes with its Education Awards ceremony in July.

The School recognised 27 staff in total from across the MBBS Medicine and BSc Medical Biosciences programmes, including those contributing overall to the student experience.

Two team awards were also given, recognising the valuable contribution made by those working together to deliver high quality teaching and experiences for ICSM students.

Long-standing tradition

Awarded annually in conjunction with Imperial College School of Medicine Students’ Union (ICSMSU), the Education Awards have been running since 2001. Starting out as a means to recognise contributions directly from clinically-based staff, the programme has since expanded to include all staff whose roles support the progression and wellbeing of ICSM students.

Categories in this year’s awards were: Supporting the Student Experience, Teaching Excellence, Teaching Fellow Excellence, the Distinguished Teacher Award (only awarded to someone who has previously won an award from the School) and the Head of School Award, which is awarded at the discretion of the Head of Imperial College School of Medicine, Professor Amir Sam, to an outstanding member of the ICSM community.

Sharing knowledge and insight

Attendees for the afternoon also experienced short talks from key School of Medicine staff, including student financial wellbeing, an upcoming Equality, Diversity and Inclusion project, and an overview of the current ICSM curriculum and strategy.

A panel discussion also took place, featuring a range of staff from across the School discussing key issues facing both medical and biomedical education, and taking questions from the keen audience.

Valuing our people

Dr James Jensen-Martin, Director of Quality and Student Experience and the MC for the event, said: “It’s hugely important that we recognise and show appreciation for the huge amount of commitment, skills and knowledge that go into supporting our students on every step of their journey.

“Imperial is a top institution globally, as is the School of Medicine in its own right, and that’s down to our incredible teams working hard every day, whatever their role or their focus, to deliver the best they possibly can. We wouldn’t have a School without them, and we want to continue to ensure that there is meaningful recognition and celebration of the people that make the School what it is – a leader in its field and an amazing place to be.

“It is an honour and a pleasure to be able to bring our community together to share knowledge and best practice and to celebrate our achievements, individually and collectively, and we are looking forward already to the 2025 ceremony!”
