Dr Sean Zheng, Clinical Lecturer in Cardiology, is featured in the latest edition of CardioPulse – the European Heart Journal’s mini-series.
Dr Sean Zheng gained the European Society of Cardiology Young Investigator Award (YIA) in the category of heart failure for a study on polygenic risk scores (PGS) for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) that predicted disease risk.
Born in Vancouver, Canada and raised in London, UK, he studied Medicine at the University of Cambridge, transferring to the University of Oxford to complete his studies. His clinical and research interests are in heart failure and cardiomyopathy, with the application of genomics and biobank-level data to understand disease pathogenesis and risk and the identification of novel biomarkers and treatment targets.
Dr Zheng describes winning the Young Investigator in heart failure as an honour. ‘It has given me great satisfaction to know that the value of the work is appreciated by colleagues and the wider cardiology community. It is a great motivation to continue to apply myself in this area, and to progress it to other forms of heart disease’. ‘I must however acknowledge that this success would not be possible without the contribution of all of our collaborators, as well as the supervision and guidance of Professor Ware’. Following on from completion of his PhD, he plans to continue with cardiology training with the goal of becoming a clinician scientist and to progress independent research interests alongside continuing to develop clinical experience in heart failure and cardiomyopathy.
