RWE / npower: Use Your Energy Challenge 2007

Don't waste your energy, use it! Keeping the lights on... how should the UK plug the impending energy gap? Win £5000 for your department!

The energy crisis is rarely out of the news. But what’s the solution? How can we safeguard the UK’s energy needs? Well, that’s where you come in. At RWE npower, we’re holding an inter-university competition to find the finest minds in engineering, science and business in their penultimate or final year. In teams of four, we want you to develop a solution that will ensure the UK’s future energy needs are met. If that wasn’t enough, we then want you to fit all your pearls of wisdom into a six-minute presentation – using whatever props you think will help you make your case more effectively.

Each member of your team needs to be from the same department and only one team can enter from each department, although you are welcome to bring supporters with you. You’ll also need to persuade one of your lecturers to join you. However, their role will just be to provide support and guidance. It’ll be up to you and your team members to provide all the thinking and of course, deliver your final presentation. To make it easier for as many people to enter as possible, there are four regional heats – which will take place in Oxfordshire, Birmingham, Leeds and Fawley. Each member of the winning team from these heats will win £100. However, far more exciting is the opportunity to compete for the £10,000* grand prize in the final which will be held in London on the 30th April. Your presentation will be judged by a panel of technical and commercial experts from RWE npower and academics. They’ll look at both how innovative and how commercially viable your solution is, your ability to apply academic theory to a practical solution and of course, your presentation and time keeping skills. Just to warn you, there’ll also be five minutes of questioning from the panel at the end of your presentation.

For more information and to enter, go to www.useyourenergy.co.uk/energychallenge. You can also email energychallenge@groupgti.com or

*Each member of the overall winning team will receive £1,250 to spend on their final year project. While their department will receive £5,000.
