GAMECITY: The World's Best Loved Video Games Festival - Friday 30 October to Saturday 1 November 2008

Every year, for three days, we turn Nottingham into a paradise for people who love games.

We put a giant screen up in the main square so people can Wii with their friends. We invite splendid people like Alexey Pajitnov and Keita Takahashi to come and talk to us about what they've been up to since Tetris and Katamari. We show banned films, debate actually important issues and debut big new games. We invite kids to come and build Lego spaceships with their Dads, we fill nightclubs and medieval churches with game music and we eat a lot of curry.

Why is it good for students?
GameCity is supported by dozens of key UK game studios, which means the festival is an unrivaled chance for you to get direct access to world-class developers. With masterclasses, lectures and post-mortems, you’ll have the chance to learn from some of the most successful and ambitious game creators in the world. GameCity attendees include SCEE, Rare, Blitz, Free Radical, Bizarre Creations, Media Molecule, Freestyle, Frontier and lots more. Portfolio clinics and bookable one-on-one advice sessions with specialists from all disciplines within the industry will give you the chance to ask questions direct to potential future employers, gain a first-hand insight into the working practices of studios, and establish beneficial relationships for your ongoing careers. If you get your course leaders involved, there’s also the opportunity for you to run your own student showcase, and compete for a coveted GameCity award.

What else is going on this year?
Marvelous, secret things. We’ll have extraordinary musical extravaganzas. Events so spectacular we’re having to consult with the police to plan them (did we mention that the festival runs over Halloween?) There’ll be visits from game developers who’ve changed the world once already and are warming up to do it again. We’re also launching our very own festival beer, taking over a superclub, showcasing the best independent games from around the world, running pub quizzes and game tournaments and quite possibly dressing up as Ulala. We’re unwilling, at this stage, to rule out fan-fiction readings, Phoenix Wright re-enactments and massively multiplayer karaoke.

How much does it cost?
For students, GameCity 3 is a snip at just £40 for three days, or £15 for one. Passes get you into all main festival events, as well as giving you access to all kinds of special offers and deals from local pubs, clubs and restaurants.

If you want to find out how to get us to pay for your ticket, and maybe even your accommodation, call and ask about becoming a student ambassador.
